Hi shiny white teeth!
Saturday, March 20, 2010

& so on Mon, I brought Nick down to ARC at the Tampines Branch for his first-ever surgery! To get those piling calculus & rotting teeth OUT. Like finally. (:D)

And being the ever independent me, the poor boy gotta walk a 15 min or so walk (despite being fasted since the night before) from home to the clinic. Thank God the clinic is quite near or I bet this teeth-scaling thing would have never come.

Anw, when i reached there, I found out that it's a Sx (surgery) day. & they actually scheduled 5 surgeries altogether, all in 1 day : O

  1. A lumpectomy for a cat who had a massive (& i really meant MASSIVE) tumor in its stomach.
  2. A pin-wire insertion for the Neighbourhood Police Post cat with a fractured leg after gotten into a car accident.
  3. 2 teeth-scaling/extractions (1 of them is Nick (: )
  4. Tail amputation for a little Syrian hammy which whole bum is swollen and its tail was hidden in that lump.
Anyway, I had already predicted that it won't be just a go-and-leave-Nick-thr-and-when-it's-done-i-can-go-and-bring-him-home thing. & true enough, I helped out. But it was nice helping out Dr Theo (my fav vet, what to do (: ) & of cos, Jo & Ben. Nice seeing familiar faces again & lucky thing I've gotten a crash course of recapping session 2 days ago when I worked one day there for an urgent replacement.

We started off with the 2 major Sx for the cats first, the lumpec & the pin-wire insertion. & gosh, they took such a LONG time. like really looooooonnggg. We started off at 10am or so & before we knew it & had our short break after we were astonished to know that it was already 4pm! : O There you go, life in this field - time dashes past like a meteor star (sorry, i can't think of a better description. haha!) I got to taste it all over again.

The tumour in the stomach. Told you it was MASSIVE.

That's our Dr Theo! Trying to drill in the wire into the fractured hind legs.

The hammy's tail amputation!

& then it was Nick's turn. I was amazed that, for such a sissy boy like him, he didn't squirm or struggle much during blood collection. Wow (: & for some weird reason, I didn't dare to look at him when Dr Theo was collecting his blood. Funny how I could pin a cat down for blood collection through the jugular vein (the neck) & not even look at Nick's.

When it was Nick's turn, he jokingly said, "It's our VIP's turn." hahahha!

I got a shock when i saw this photo. Man, it was bloody!

But anyway, I've always wanted to be there helping out when it's Nick's turn to be on the Sx table, & woola! I did it (: It just felt really different seeing & doing all the prepping & knocking down & intubating procedures on your own dog when we are doing the exact normal routine on the others. Seeing him all groggy and clumsily trying to get up after the anesthesia wore off was funny. And so, he got 1 incisor, 2-3 premolars & 2 canines (!!) out. Yes, 2 canines from his left side. So he's got that funny look when he "smiles" unevenly now :D & this boy shocked me totally when he howled when he was in one of the cages at the back of the clinic. The thing is, he howled. & that's something I've never heard or seen him do before in these 8 years. Wow. I should have just recorded it! hahhahah.

Still in groggy mode.

Oh & ya, I left the clinic at 9pm in the end. So i kinda practically worked there, in another word. It was crazy after all the Sx was done when the mummies & daddies came flocking in to want to know their babies' progress & not to mention that there were other appts scheduled in too! A packed waiting room wasn't a good sight. But hope that I did help lighten the workload for poor Jo that day. I could not imagine her managing all of that herself. Madness.

That's Jo!

The new job scope of a vet nurse: To hold the phones for the vet in assuring worried clients in the midst of surgeries.

& if you're wondering how the boy is getting on with his new shiny white teeth & together with his ba-gei smile.....

I guess you should know from that silly smile :D
